Every day is Earth Day at Ardent Market. Since launching, it's been a priority to reduce harm to our natural resources and integrate some ethical, responsible policies that help protect our planet.
After working in retail for over a decade, I've committed to being transparent about Ardent Market's internal policies. Cardboard is an incredibly challenging problem in The United States, and the food and retail industries are significant contributors.
Our country uses around 100 billion corrugated boxes each year. Cardboard and paper make up 41% of our solid waste, and the average household throws out 13,000 separate pieces of cardboard every year. In the United States, 850 million tons of paper and cardboard are tossed annually, which equals 1 billion trees. That means that each American household uses seven trees per year in cardboard and paper.
We can't afford to be indifferent to this problem, especially when running a US retail with US products; it's an essential business practice to make changes and practice transparency in the hopes of constantly improving and protecting our planet.
I do not have it all figured out, but I have made some strides in processing and packing your orders. It seems simple enough, but I recycle the boxes and materials from every order received.
Every order received from an artist, brand, or maker is sorted and stored. So, each order uses those same materials for outgoing orders. Not every box is pretty, but it will use it if it can withstand some brutal shipping conditions. I know you're not judging the box, but you want the items inside safe and sound!
Sometimes, orders need extra packaging for your breakables. And I still believe that green shipping can include an unboxing experience. If any additional packaging materials are required, they are made from recycled materials, sustainable and biodegradable components, and most can be re-used.
+ The tissue paper is FCS-certified, acid-free paper, with soy-based inks
+ Branded tape is plastic-free and can be recycled
+ Packing peanuts are biodegradable (dissolve with water)
+ The signature white boxes are made from recycled materials**
+ Business cards and post cards are made with recycled paper or cotton
I hope this information helps you order with some peace of mind, knowing your order has not contributed to the ongoing damage to our natural resources and planet. In addition, I hope you will recycle (and even compost) some of the boxes and packaging materials yourself!
*As of research in 2019, These statistics are just for cardboard, tissue, and newsprint. These numbers don't include the packaging materials made from plastic, like bubble wrap or glass foam.
**No materials are purchased from Uline. I will recycle Uline boxes from orders received, but no items are purchased. Please visit this page for more information on what it takes to partner with AM and align with our values.
